The Mauna Kea Forest Restoration Project works to restore the fragile native forest on the slopes of Mauna Kea volcano – the tallest mountain on earth. The critically endangered palila, a finch-billed species of Hawaiian honeycreeper, is found only on the southwestern slopes of Mauna Kea. Due to centuries of land transformation and deforestation, only 2,000 palila remain.
